Antique Rugs and Pantone's Color of the Year - Marsala

Posted on March 2, 2015

Just imagine for a moment the deep, earthy color of a dusky Marsala wine or the rich color of dark clay when touched by the setting sun. Now you're under the spell of Marsala, selected as the 2015 color of the year by the Pantone Color Institute. The Institute is the global expert on color systems and is recognized worldwide for its color insight and color trend forecasting.

"This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors," says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director at Pantone.

Marsala Adds a Dramatic Touch to Antique Rugs

Antique and vintage rugs have featured this luscious color long before it became the "it" color of the year. Warm and earthy Marsala evokes a smoky richness that's strong enough to stand on its own and subtle enough to provide a fabulous accent. The color enriches textured surfaces, making it a perfect choice for upholstered furniture and rugs.

Splashes of Marsala in Indian and Persian rugs provide drama and make a grand statement. Vintage rag rugs, braided rugs and hook rugs from America also incorporate this dusky red to emulate the reddish-brown roots of early dye techniques. Luscious kilim rugs and runners from Turkey incorporate Marsala in their dramatic patterns. Antique and vintage rugs from India use Marsala to create delicate patterns of flowers, symbols and ancient patterns.

Marsala not only dresses up interior floor spaces; it can be found in beautiful accessories and accent pieces too. When Marsala-colored items are finished in matte textures, the result is a very organic, natural look, but when a bit of sheen is added to an item, it takes on a sophisticated luxurious look and feel. Marsala complements many room color palettes and pairs beautifully with muted shades of aubergine, grey and taupe, and also works with brighter colors, including jade, yellow and pink.

Marsala makes a great foundation color. Beautiful rooms can be built upon it with vintage and antique rugs and interesting accent pieces. Marsala will be a favorite color for interiors for years to come. Incorporating the color with beautiful rugs and carpets make a space especially stylish and relevant.
