An antique Indo Tabriz carpet. This finely woven hunting carpet is adapted from the famous Safavid silk carpet in Vienna. Here the palette is deeper and richer. The angels (peris) in the royal blue border also follow the classical archetype. There is a lightly scalloped lozenge medallion, animal combats and a spring flowering landscape around the royal horsemen. As pictorial carpets go, this one has a solid design pedigree.
