An antique Persian Afshar rug. The pole medallion of three abrashed stepped diamonds contains dozens of characteristic Khamseh chickens and many more strut about on the red surrounding field in this Fars province, southern Persian, nomadic carpet. Botehs and still more domestic fowl decorate the grey-blue filler triangles at the field edges. The construction is all wool and the pile is relatively low, but even an original.
