Antique Persian Malayer Pictorial Rug

No. 8963
Persia, Circa 1911
4 ft. 4 in. x 6 ft. 8 in.
(1.31 x 2.02 m)

An antique Persian Malayer Pictorial rug. The inscription cartouche indicates the subject is King Solomon and the date is about 1911. in a frogged orange coat, the king reposes on his demon supported, elaborately decorated throne, surrounded by a cast of ministers and flunkies, all in colorful stylized oriental garb. The drawing is naive and charming, certainly the work of a rural weaver. This is more of a wall hanging since who would walk on King Solomon?
