An antique Persian Tabriz carpet. A pattern of two linked columns of erect and tilted palmettes with lesser bud and leaf elements occupies an abrashed slate field of this neatly executed urban carpet, with iris amphora palmettes. Although the pattern is balanced side-to-side, it has slipped vertically, giving it the appearance of infinite extension. The palmette and strapwork border has 16th-century Persian sources.
