A Persian ruler, probably Muhammed Shah of the Mughal Empire, is riding in an open carriage, reviewing his troops and serenaded by military buglers in the foreground of this antique rug. An inscription in the ivory field identifies the main figure and a large brown cartouche above provides more details about the valiant soldiers in the Shah’s (Emperor’s) service. The boteh (paisley) and vine border is a Saraband standby.
