Antique Persian Tabriz Pictorial Rug

A wool pile of symmetric knots on a cotton foundation. The warm ecru-to-creamy-ivory field is divided into two sections, with figures and architectural elements rendered in taupe, brown, coral-red, crimson, dusty pink, pale blue, and dark blue. The upper section depicts a winged angel in a wheeled chariot and a group of Persian gentlemen led by a figure in the orans pose. Below, a seated military figure holds a whip, with a soldier beneath him, a couple at the left, and another figure turning a handle on the roof of a brick building. The crimson-red main border features pale blue-grey to cream inscription cartouches with soft yellow lettering describing the obscure scene. Small stepped diamonds form a garbled date. The imagery is probably derived from a Persian fable.
