A wool pile of symmetric knots on a wool foundation. Derived from antique Caucasian silk embroideries, this striking piece features a layered diamond medallion in brick red, coral, muted teal-green, blue, brown, and ivory, anchored to the near-black to deep-navy field by four ivory-to-warm-cream claw-like elements. Four similar claws appear in pairs at the ends of the field. Rows of cartouches divide the field into three sections, while tentacular sprays and small octagonal roundels are symmetrically scattered throughout. The camel-to-warm-ochre border displays various botehs and eccentric palmettes in coral, burgundy, teal, blue, ivory, and brown. A very attractive, though fairly late, piece.
