Vintage Persian Mahal Oversize Carpet

This nearly mansion-sized west Persian antique village carpet deploys the European-influenced allover Mustafi design in four offset columns. Note the spiral vines (islimi), the broken acanthus wreaths and the central rose bouquets, on the medium slate ground. The red madder border features a trapezoidal meander and two types of flowers, all in a progressive pattern. Blue and slate grounds are the most popular of Mustafi grounds, and none are in green, yellow, or even red. Cotton foundation. Medium-coarse weave.
