A wool pile of symmetric knots on a cotton foundation. This small mat is a fragment of a once-larger rug and neatly depicts a Memling gul with a color-sampler diamond center, surrounded by a hooked, broadly stepped cruciform and bounded by an oblate octagonal outline. The Memling gul motif appears on Turkmen, Caucasian, Kurd, Hamadan, and southern Persian pieces, either as singletons or in multiples providing allover coverage.
