A vintage Persian Shiraz rug. The tribes around Shiraz, in Fars province, SW Persia, are known for their colorful, wholly geometric rugs, of which this one, with three pole medallions composed of densely hooked lozenges, is a characteristic example. The connected abstract “S” (Syrga) border, here on ivory, appears on many Persian and Turkoman nomadic pieces. The four corner dogs refer to the canines guarding the tribal flocks of sheep.
