A vintage Turkish Oushak carpet. Oushaks continually derive inspiration from other carpet genres, all the while transforming them into unique statements. Everything on this ivory ground piece was borrowed from NW Persia: the gooseneck stiff vines; the rough-edged palmettes; the diagonal leafy lines; but everything is given a characteristic Turkish twist with a bit of wildness tossed into the mix. The light blue slanted palmette and “saz” (lancet) leaf border are a bit restrained to make a nice contrast.
