An antique Central Asian Soumak carpet. The soft madder ground displays the desirable “Dragon” design adapted from 17th-century Caucasian Karabagh carpets, but here modified with countless hooks, both within and around the ivory and royal blue-winged shapes. No area is left unfilled and the totally abstract character admits nothing figural or representational. The yellow border of colorful octagons adds a simple frame. The pattern is dynamic. A great match for country furniture. Always popular in New England.
