An antique East Turkestan Kirghiz carpet. The deep crimson field displays a pattern of zig-zags, leafy stems and flattened rosettes clearly adapted from Persian sources. The notably abrashed mid-blue border alternates dot squares with little abstract flowers. The Kirghiz are primarily sheepherders and although there must be a substantial rug weaving tradition, all surviving carpets date from after the middle of the 19th century.
