An antique Persian Bakhshaish carpet. The earliest rugs from the Heriz district surviving in numbers are those termed ‘Bakshaish’. This c. 1880 example displays a royal blue field with a close allover Herati pattern. The tan rosette and recurved slanted leaf border is classic for Azerbaijan carpets of this period. The longish, narrow format is indicative of a domestic, non-export market destination. This is a ‘real rug’, naturally dyed with an all wool foundation.
