Antique Persian Mahal Carpet

An antique Persian Mahal carpet. From a distance, the traditional Herati pattern on the abrashed slate ground makes a vertical columnar zig-zag pattern. Although basically a simple pattern, the Herati uncannily lends itself to enormous variation and visually layered patternings. This west Persian rustic carpet shows a sandy beige border with reversing turtle palmettes and the associated boteh ‘fish’ leaves and rosettes.
