Antique Persian Sultanabad Carpet

An antique Persian Sultanabad carpet. The small scale allover field pattern of palmettes and floral devices marks it as a Mahal, but the generous, wide border gives it a Sultanabad character. Both types of rugs come from the same place: the Arak district in northwest Persia. Sultanabads are an earlier style than Mahals, so this may be a very attractive transitional carpet.
