An antique Persian Tabriz carpet. Tabriz is famous for design eclecticism and the subdued piece here has adapted the Caucasian Zeychur St. Andrew's cross to form a large scale lozenge trellis with stylised floral fillers. The border, with a faceted arcaded vine enclosing palmettes, is equally abstract. The fine weave of NW Persian Tabriz urban carpets does not preclude occasional forays into rustic or tribal design sources.
