Antique Russian Soumak Square Throw Rug

A wool soumak-stitch weft patterning on a wool foundation. This classic piece features three deep navy-to-indigo reticulated medallions on a madder-red to warm coral-red ground, outlined in ivory, tan, and coral. Variations include pointed rather than squared-off medallion ends, ragged palmettes, and pinwheel rosettes in turquoise-blue, teal, soft green, golden yellow, orange, brown, and cream. The unusual dark brown-to-near-black main border displays octagrams separated by T-bar spacers, while the outer border features a two-toned wave pattern in madder red and dark blue. A very interesting piece with subtle variations.
