East Turkestan, Mid-20th Century

A wool pile of asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. The design consists of five rows of two pale dusty-rose to blush-pink niches, each with taupe to gray-brown spandrels. The niches are separated and framed by gray-brown bands decorated with floating rosettes in blush, beige, and dark brown. The pale pink-beige to sand main border displays a continuous meander with volutes. Saphs were originally intended as communal mosque prayer rugs, with one niche panel for each worshiper.
