Vintage Persian Gabbeh Pictorial Rug

The dark blue upper panel takes up most of the field and displays a mottled black and brown sheep; below are smaller squares with more sheep and geometric rosettes. The colored triangle border breaks for the sheep’s muzzle at the right. The inscription is not Persian, probably not Armenian, but maybe a Cyrillic transcription of a Central Asian name. Persian Gabbeh rugs and its tribal roots are known for fun and quirky designs.
