Vintage Persian Tabriz Pictorial Rug

A wool pile of symmetric knots on a cotton foundation. The medieval Persian-Arabic scholar is depicted bust-length, facing left, with a dark beard and conjoint mustache, a hooked nose, and a pale blue turban cascading onto a rust robe, all set against a near-black plain ground. An identifying cartouche below gives his name and a date of birth of 1048 within the lower arabesque border. Five additional cartouches at the sides and top contain nastaliq inscriptions.
