Vintage Turkish Anatolian Pictorial Rug

A wool pile of symmetric knots on a wool foundation. The abrashed, muted raspberry-brown field displays two similar confronting lions standing on a blue-gray band, perhaps representing water. The left lion is rendered primarily in charcoal and ochre, while the right appears in ivory and ochre; both are detailed in black, coral, and red and have stylized, almost human faces. A narrow border of diagonal stripes in ivory, brown, black, coral, and muted blue surrounds the field. Originally woven as a cushion cover.
