Vintage Turkish Anatolian Pictorial Rug (Pair: 1 of 2)

No. 33429
Turkey, Mid-20th Century
1 ft. 9 in. x 3 ft. 3 in.
(0.53 x 0.99 m)

A wool pile of symmetric knots on a wool foundation. A visual pair to rug # 33459. Signed “Murat.” This short-warp piece depicts two confronting deer or gazelles flanking a geometric, semi-architectural device. Each animal has three visible legs, with the fourth presumably concealed, and an ivory hide decorated with dusty-rose and brown zigzag patterns. The open field is dark charcoal-brown. The dusty rose-brown border features square blossoms on a trapezoidal meander at the ends and partial fan palmettes along the sides, with accents in black, ivory, coral red, yellow, and brown. Possibly originally woven as a yastik, or cushion cover.
