Vintage Turkish Anatolian Pictorial Rug (Pair: 2 of 2)

No. 33436
Turkey, Mid-20th Century
2 ft. 1 in. x 2 ft. 6 in.
(0.64 x 0.76 m)

A wool pile of symmetric knots on a wool foundation. A visual pair to rug # 33441. Unlike the more common double-lion mats, this piece depicts a single lion standing on a muted olive-gray plinth against a rust-brown field. The animal has a large human-like face, a striated black-and-ecru mane, and an ecru body detailed in brown, black, taupe, and pale pink. Three star-like floral motifs appear at each side of the field. The ecru border displays a trapezoidal meander fitted with T-shaped motifs in black, brown, gray, and pink. Probably originally woven as a cushion cover, or yastik, though not in the usual format.
