An antique Persian Bakshaish carpet. Bakshaish is another name for those NW Persian Heriz rustic carpets of the 1880-90 period, often with open fields, as here in straw, light or medium blue corners, and smart medallions, as here in light green. The uncluttered powder blue to ivory doubly bent leaf and rosette border is absolutely characteristic of the period. This visual clarity and areas of solid (or nearly so) color were confined to a relatively short period of Heriz area rug weaving. This is a truly striking and direct carpet.
