Antique Persian Kerman Pictorial Rug

An antique Persian Kerman Pictorial rug. A kneeling Safavid Persian Shah, identified by the red panel to the right, is depicted on a sand ground while leaning against a cushion bolster. Imperial lions fill the red spandrels above the columniated niche. Birds, dogs, saddled horses and various human figures in cartoon style animate the ivory main border.  Three further birds feature in the panel beneath the Shah.
