Antique Persian Lavar Kerman Pictorial Rug

No. 25000
Persia, Early 20th Century
2 ft. 2 in. x 2 ft. 10 in.
(0.66 x 0.86 m)

A wool pile of asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. Seated on an animal skin, the youthful dervish Nur Ali Shah wears an ecru coat and a striped conical hat, clutching a staff, with his kashkul (begging bowl) placed in front. The red ground is animated by a protective blue tree arching in from the left. A pale blue elliptical surround and inner border frame the figure, while the main border of cartouches and quadrilobe inscriptions completes this standard Nur ‘Ali iconography.
