An antique Turkish Oushak carpet. Similar generally to our rug # 8815, but here the field order is reversed with a central column of lozenges, cruciforms, and bent leaf brackets, flanked by two columns of conjoined complex Harshang palmettes. The narrow light blue main border is strictly Anatolian with hyacinth sprays alternating with simple rosettes. The red ground is not quite the ultra-saturated “Turkey red” of the period carpets, but it sets off the various blues admirably. An excellent dining room size carpet.
