Antique Turkish Oushak Large Room Size Carpet

A wool pile of symmetric knots on a cotton foundation. This early-1920s room-size carpet is woven in the popular Persianizing style of the period. Its slate blue-gray field displays three columns of individual trees, flanked by slender cypresses, weeping willows, and potted plants. The trees are stylized chenars, or plane trees, and prunus, or flowering plums, rendered in ecru, beige, pale pink, rust red, taupe, and dark brown. The well-drawn pale blue-gray to ivory main border turns appropriately at the corners and features weeping foliage and wiry diagonal branches. A plain dark blue-gray outer surround completes the design. A particularly attractive example of this deservedly popular pattern.
