A wool pile of symmetric knots on a wool foundation. This Smyrna-style city carpet displays three columns of elaborately hooked, torn palmettes and two columns of diamond-shaped Yaprak medallions on a soft rust field. The narrow sand-bone main border features a trapezoidal meander with leaves or flowers set within the defined reserves. The field pattern can be traced back to at least the 18th century. The weave is coarse and relatively loose, and the piece dates to pre-1900.
