A wool pile with asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. This large Central Asian oasis city carpet features an intriguing combination of traditional designs. The field is diagonally color-banded in greyish and light grey cream, with arrays of stepped cruciforms inspired by Khirghiz rugs. The middle border is derived from Persian Malayers, while the inner fret border has Chinese origins. The stepped outer border, with diagonals and zigzags, is characteristic of Khotanese designs.
