A wool pile of asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. This borderless piece depicts Hercules battling lions, riders combating wild beasts, a Persian king, dancing girls, deer, ducks, tempiettos, vases, cloud bands, dervish axes and kashkuls (begging bowls), along with a veritable cascade of other Persian pattern tropes. The larger overpattern takes the form of a pendant vase set atop a split arabesque of defined palmettes. Unmistakably a rug in the Persian taste.
