Vintage Turkish Anatolian Room Size Carpet

A wool-and-cotton pile of symmetric knots on a cotton foundation. This extraordinary room-size piece, on a warm ecru-to-ivory-sand ground, displays three columns of four medallions each, decorated throughout with Caucasian motifs often associated with Kuba Soumak rugs, including birds, animals, octagons, lozenges, and stepped devices. The motifs are rendered primarily in olive green, mustard-gold, khaki, tan, and soft brown, with selective bright-red accents. The olive-gold to ochre border combines Turkmen-style hooked squares with nested lozenge-diamonds. Red cotton is used selectively in appropriate areas. Although the design is disciplined and complex, subtle variations occur among the motifs. The high quality of the workmanship suggests production in a supervised workshop.
