An antique Caucasian Karabagh rug. A rose cochineal ground displays an indescribable “Russian” pattern in which volute cruciforms, stylized botehs, and leafy-filled black octagons play a part. The pattern probably derives from late 19th century printed cotton textiles. The narrow border with extended chevrons is a purely secondary matter. The design action is in the field. The color palette, oddly, goes perfectly with Indian carpets to make an interesting matchup.
