An antique East Turkestan Samarkand rug. This is some sort of Central Asian, the trans-Oxus rug with a panel pattern of unusual flowering anchors on a charcoal ground, framed by a forked vine and rosette border. The whole effect is reminiscent of felt cut-out rugs but more elaborate and detailed. Not woven in Samarkand in any case, but the term is a useful prop to our ignorance.
