Antique Indian Agra Long and Narrow Carpet

A wool pile of asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. This truly enormous urban piece is likely a custom weaving from the Agra City Jail, a source of many large carpets produced on contract for European importers. The light blue field displays a uniform allover pattern of jagged botehs, ragged open diamonds, and small, stylized cypresses. Doubly hooked palmettes and other palmette forms appear throughout the meticulously arranged red main border. This is a spectacular gallery carpet for a spectacular gallery.
