This early 20th century Khotan is a prime example of rugs originating from East Turkestan and Samarkand. The pomegranate-vase-patterned allover design shows great significance to Kashgar which is considered by natives as the capital or "Heart of East Turkestan" and often referred to as "Pomegranate City." It was also a major crossroad during the Silk Road trade so the cultural diffusion behind Khotan rugs, especially between Turkmen, Bukhara, Persian, and Chinese civilizations is an astounding wonder. The pomegranate motif is symmetrical in two directions with a subtle dusty rose hue and outlined by a muted reddish-tan color. It sits pleasantly over a field that offers multiple shades of aqua green, grey, and turquoise giving the rug a "less is more" feel. The evenly low pile texture makes for an authentic antique and decorative appeal. However, the carpet works well with both traditional and contemporary interior decoration.
