An antique Persian Fereghan rug. Where to begin in describing this simply extraordinary semi-pictorial carpet? A white div (demon) lifts a tree of life whose branches intertwine arabesques enclosing wild animals on the red niche-shaped field under navy spandrels. The medium blue border has vignettes taken from Persian literature, animal combats, fantastic beasts and levels of floral arabesques. The color range is extraordinary and the designers have referenced obscure points of the Persian national epic poem, the Shah Nameh. This carpet, of unusual format and exceedingly complex iconography, must have been a very special commission for an intellectual. The drawing is more likely to be seen on Tabriz carpets rather than on Farahan-Sarouks.
