Antique Persian Lavar Kerman Oversize Carpet

A wool pile of asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. This vast urban creation shows Kerman weaving at its most inventive, with petal palmettes, coiled wiry leaves in deep slate blue and muted navy, racemes set within barbed foliage, loosely drawn palmettes, and sinuous leafy stems, all densely arranged across a warm sand to pale golden-beige ground. The design is accented in soft brown, taupe, pale rust, ivory, and touches of olive-grey. The sand-to-warm-beige main border features properly turned corner palmettes, along with petal palmettes and rosettes in slate blue, brown, rust, and ivory. Finely woven with a thoroughly professional facture. Such antique Kermans were produced primarily for a discerning fin-de-siècle American clientele that expected the highest quality.
