Antique Persian Lavar Kerman Pictorial Rug

No. 13312
Persia, Early 20th Century
2 ft. 3 in. x 2 ft. 5 in.
(0.69 x 0.74 m)

A wool pile of asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. The slightly abrashed royal blue ground depicts a well-armed female warrior bearing spear, sword, and dagger, standing on a rocky hillock and wearing a rust cape over beige robes. Abstract, tall floral forms rise at the sides. Blue corner spandrels support an ecru oval frame that merges into the rectangular border of the rug. There is no inscription. The figure’s identity is uncertain, perhaps Zenobia, or another warrior queen but her stance conveys clear resolve and determination.
