An antique Persian Malayer carpet. This offbeat room size west Persian town carpet displays an old ivory field adorned with six widely spaced, offset rows of two alternating types of jardinieres flanked by birds with other fowl perched nearby. Clearly derived from the Zil-i-Sultan design (Shadow of the Sultan) which mostly appears on very finely woven scatter sizes with ivory grounds, the pattern is rare in such a developed form on larger pieces. The grey-green main border shows sawtooth diagonal leaves and geometric palmettes on an angular meander.
