An antique Persian Malayer Pictorial rug. This city pictorial small scatter depicts the seated 19th-century Sufi dervish Nur ‘Ali Shah with his tall hat (kula), protective axe and begging bowl (kashkul), set against a dark blue, abrashed sky with tall, flowering plants. The inscription cartouches in the border identify the figure. Nur ‘Ali Shah was depicted as a youth on numerous small rugs, many from Kerman, and other Persian works of art from the later 19th century onwards.
