Antique Turkish Ghiordes Room Size Carpet

A wool pile of symmetric knots on a wool foundation. The western Anatolian town of Ghiordes has been weaving rugs since the 17th century, most often in the small namazlik (prayer rug) format. Here, however, is a larger, squarish carpet executed in the upright stripe or cane design, rendered in shades of light red, light green straw, and cream, with stencil petal palmettes distributed across the bands.
