A vintage Persian Gabbeh rug. A five by six chessboard array of squares with in abrashed ivory, goldenrod, rose, camel, grey, charcoal and buff, each with a central dot, looks like a color sampler but is likely to be a self-contained actual ruglet from the Qashghai tribe in southern Persian Fars province. The squares are placed randomly, with tonal repetitions, adding to the informal charm of the piece.
