A vintage Indian Lahore carpet. The slate ground of this northern Indian city carpet has a design, suitably shortened and otherwise adjusted, derived from 16th century Safavid Persian carpets with cypresses in a dense jungle setting and a medallion with cartouche pendants. The design was adapted from illustrations in carpet books of the day. This was a popular practice in both India and Persia, especially Tabriz.
