An antique Chinese Art Deco carpet. The sapphire blue border and the dark buff field are graphically merged by various motives and vignettes including a long yellow branch on the left which suspends four exotic lanterns, and a bridge/gazebo along the bottom. The branch also bears tree peonies. As with many Art Deco Chinese rugs, a pars-pro-toto design ethos applies in which one element stands in for something larger. From Tientsin (Tianjin). Solid, heavy weave.
