An antique Persian Mahal carpet. Leafy large and colorful petal fan palmettes dominate the rust-red field of this exceptionally proportioned giant west Persian village mansion size carpet which was clearly a special commission. Sections of dark blue vinery, lesser palmettes, various rosettes, and concave open diamonds add to the visually enthralling variety. The border has a particularly nice bottle green in the classically derived palmette and strapwork design. Nearly a Sultanabad, but perhaps a little later.
